1. God has accepted His saints in His Beloved,[1] effectually called them, and sanctified them by His Spirit. Hence, His saints can neither totally, nor finally, fall away from the state of grace, but will certainly persevere in it to the end, and be eternally saved.
Philippians 1:6 (ESV KJ3 NASB WEB) ; 2 Peter 1:10 (ESV KJ3 NASB WEB) ; John 10:28–29 (ESV KJ3 NASB WEB) ; 1 John 3:9 (ESV KJ3 NASB WEB) ; 1 Peter 1:5, 9 (ESV KJ3 NASB WEB)
2. This perseverance of the saints depends not upon their own free will, but upon:
· The unchangeableness of the decree of election, flowing from the free and unchangeable love of God the Fathera
· The efficacy of the merit and intercession of Jesus Christb
· The abiding of the Spirit, and of the seed[2] of God within themc
· The nature of the covenant of grace.d
From all of these arise also the certainty and infallibility of the perseverance of the saints.e

3. Nevertheless, saints may fall into grievous sins through the temptations of Satan and of the world, the prevalence of corruption remaining in them, and the neglect of the means of their preservation.a And, for a time, they may continue in sin.b Thus they:
· Incur God’s displeasurec and grieve His Holy Spiritd
· Come to be deprived of some measure of their graces and comfortse
· Have their hearts hardenedf and their consciences woundedg
· Hurt and scandalize othersh
· Bring temporal judgments upon themselves.i

Hebrews 9:12–15 (ESV) Back
12he entered once for all into the holy
places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own
blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. 13For if the blood of goats and bulls, and
the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the
purification of the flesh, 14how much more will the blood of Christ,
who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify
our conscience from dead works to serve the living God. 15Therefore he is the mediator of a new
covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal
inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the
transgressions committed under the first covenant.
Hebrews 9:12-15 (KJ3) Back
12 nor through the blood of goats and
of calves, but through His own blood, He entered once for all
into the Holy of Holies, having procured everlasting redemption.
13 For if the blood of bulls and
goats, and ashes of a heifer, sprinkling those having been defiled, sanctifies
to the purity of the flesh,
14 by how much more the blood of
Christ (who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish
to God), will purify your conscience from dead works, to serve the living
God!
15¶ And because of this He is
Mediator of a new covenant, so that, death having occurred for redemption of
transgressions under the first covenant, the ones being called might
receive the promise of the everlasting inheritance.
Hebrews 9:12–15 (NASB95) Back
12and not through the blood of goats and
calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all,
having obtained eternal redemption. 13For if the blood of goats and bulls and
the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled sanctify for the
cleansing of the flesh, 14how much more will the blood of Christ, who
through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your
conscience from dead works to serve the living God? 15For this reason He is the mediator of a
new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the
transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have
been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.
Hebrews 9:12-15 (WEB) Back
12 nor yet through the blood of goats and
calves, but through his own blood, entered in once for all into the Holy Place,
having obtained eternal redemption.
13 For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the
ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled, sanctify to the
cleanness of the flesh:
14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who
through the eternal Spirit offered himself without defect to God, cleanse your
conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
15 For this reason he is the mediator of a new
covenant, since a death has occurred for the redemption of the transgressions
that were under the first covenant, that those who have been called may receive
the promise of the eternal inheritance.
Romans 8:33–39 (ESV) Back
33Who shall bring any charge against God’s
elect? It is God who justifies. 34Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one
who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who
indeed is interceding for us. 35Who shall separate us from the love of
Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or
nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36As it is written, “For your sake we are
being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37No, in
all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38For I
am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present
nor things to come, nor powers, 39nor height nor depth, nor anything else in
all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus
our Lord.
Romans 8:33-39 (KJ3) Back
33 Who will bring any charge
against the elect ones of God? God is the One justifying!
34 Who is the one condemning?
Christ is the One having died, but rather also having been
raised, who also is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes
on our behalf.
35 Who shall separate us from the
love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or
famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?
36 Even as it is written, “For Your
sake we are killed all the day; we are counted as sheep of slaughter.Ӡ
37 But in all these things we are
more than a conquerer through Him loving us.
38 For I am persuaded that neither
death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor powers, nor things present,
nor things to come,
39 nor height, nor depth, nor any
other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ
Jesus, our Lord.
Romans 8:33–39 (NASB95) Back
33Who will bring a charge against God’s
elect? God is the one who justifies; 34who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus
is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God,
who also intercedes for us. 35Who will separate us from the love of
Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness,
or peril, or sword? 36Just as it is written, “For Your sake we are being
put to death all day long; We were considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37But in
all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. 38For I
am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor
things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39nor height, nor depth, nor any other
created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in
Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:33-39 (WEB) Back
33 Who could bring a charge against God’s
chosen ones? It is God who justifies.
34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who
died, yes rather, who was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of
God, who also makes intercession for us.
35 Who shall separate us from the love of
Christ? Could oppression, or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness,
or peril, or sword?
36
Even as it is written,
37 No, in all these things, we are more than
conquerors through him who loved us.
38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor
life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come,
nor powers,
39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created
thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus
our Lord.

[1] His Beloved: Jesus Christ
[2] seed of
God: The meaning is uncertain. The phrase is used in 1 Peter 1:23 (ESV KJ3 NASB WEB) and 1 John 3:9 (ESV KJ3 NASB WEB) . Probably this refers to
being born again, not from natural seed, but from spiritual seed. Matthew Henry
(Commentary on the Whole Bible, 1
Peter 1:23 (ESV KJ3 NASB WEB) ) suggests that the seed
likely refers to the Word of God. This latter interpretation is consistent with
the Parable of the Sower (Luke 8:11 (ESV KJ3 NASB WEB) ). The analogy may be made
from the seed (sperm) of natural generation and birth to being born again of
the Word and Holy Spirit.
