Chapter 25: Of the Church$

Chapter 25: Of the Church

1. The catholic[1] (or universal) Church consists of the whole number of the elect that have been, are, or will be gathered into one, under Christ the Head of His Church.[2] The Church is the spouse, the body, and the fullness of Jesus Christ, who fills all in all. This universal Church is invisible.

2. [Like the invisible Church,] the visible Church is also catholic (or universal) under the Gospel since it is not confined to one nation as before under the law. The visible Church consists of all those throughout the world who profess the true religion,a including their children.b It is the kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ,c the house and family of God,d outside of which there is no ordinary possibility of salvation.e

Ch. 25:1

Ephesians 1:10, 22–23  (ESV)                    Back

10as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.

22And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, 23which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

Ephesians 1:10, 22-23  (KJ3)                    Back

10 for the administration of the fullness of the times to head up all things in Christ, both the things in the heavens, and the things on earth, in Him,

22 and He “put all things under His feet” and gave Him to be Head over all things to the Assembly,

23 which is His body: the fullness of the One filling all things in all;

Ephesians 1:10, 22–23  (NASB95)                    Back

10with a view to an administration suitable to the fullness of the times, that is, the summing up of all things in Christ, things in the heavens and things on the earth. In Him

22And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, 23which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

Ephesians 1:10, 22-23  (WEB)                    Back

10 to an administration of the fullness of the times, to sum up all things in Christ, the things in the heavens, and the things on the earth, in him;

22 He put all things in subjection under his feet, and gave him to be head over all things for the assembly,

23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

Ephesians 5:23, 27, 32  (ESV)                    Back

23For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.

27so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.

32This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.

Ephesians 5:23, 27, 32  (KJ3)                    Back

23 because a husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is Head of the Assembly, and He is Savior of the body.

27 that He might present her to Himself as the glorious Assembly, not having spot or wrinkle, or any such things, but that she be holy and without blemish.

32 The mystery is great, but I speak as to Christ and as to the Assembly.

Ephesians 5:23, 27, 32  (NASB95)                    Back

23For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body.

27that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless.

32This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church.

Ephesians 5:23, 27, 32  (WEB)                    Back

23 For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the assembly, being himself the savior of the body.

27 that he might present the assembly to himself gloriously, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without defect.

32 This mystery is great, but I speak concerning Christ and of the assembly.

Colossians 1:18  (ESV)                    Back

18And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.

Colossians 1:18  (KJ3)                    Back

18 And He is the Head of the body, the Assembly, who is the Beginning, the Firstborn out of the dead ones that He having first place in all things;

Colossians 1:18  (NASB95)                    Back

18He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.

Colossians 1:18  (WEB)                    Back

18 He is the head of the body, the assembly, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

Ch. 25:2

1 Corinthians 1:2  (ESV)                    Back

2To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours:

1 Corinthians 1:2  (KJ3)                    Back

2 to the assembly of God which is in Corinth, those having been sanctified in Christ Jesus, called saints, with all the ones calling on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ in every place, both theirs and ours:

1 Corinthians 1:2  (NASB95)                    Back

2To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling, with all who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:

1 Corinthians 1:2  (WEB)                    Back

2 to the assembly of God which is at Corinth; those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called saints, with all who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ in every place, both theirs and ours:

1 Corinthians 12:12–13  (ESV)                    Back

12For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.

1 Corinthians 12:12-13  (KJ3)                    Back

12¶ Even as the body is one, and has many members, but all the members of the one body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ.

Revelation 2–3  (ESV)                    Back

2:1“To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: ‘The words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands. 2“ ‘I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false. 3I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name’s sake, and you have not grown weary. 4But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. 5Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. 6Yet this you have: you hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. 7He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.’ 8“And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write: ‘The words of the first and the last, who died and came to life. 9“ ‘I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich) and the slander of those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. 10Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life. 11He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who conquers will not be hurt by the second death.’ 12“And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write: ‘The words of him who has the sharp two-edged sword. 13“ ‘I know where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is. Yet you hold fast my name, and you did not deny my faith even in the days of Antipas my faithful witness, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells. 14But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, so that they might eat food sacrificed to idols and practice sexual immorality. 15So also you have some who hold the teaching of the Nicolaitans. 16Therefore repent. If not, I will come to you soon and war against them with the sword of my mouth. 17He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it.’ 18“And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write: ‘The words of the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and whose feet are like burnished bronze. 19“ ‘I know your works, your love and faith and service and patient endurance, and that your latter works exceed the first. 20But I have this against you, that you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and is teaching and seducing my servants to practice sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols. 21I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality. 22Behold, I will throw her onto a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her I will throw into great tribulation, unless they repent of her works, 23and I will strike her children dead. And all the churches will know that I am he who searches mind and heart, and I will give to each of you according to your works. 24But to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who have not learned what some call the deep things of Satan, to you I say, I do not lay on you any other burden. 25Only hold fast what you have until I come. 26The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations, 27and he will rule them with a rod of iron, as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father. 28And I will give him the morning star. 29He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’ 3:1“And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: ‘The words of him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. “ ‘I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead. 2Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God. 3Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you. 4Yet you have still a few names in Sardis, people who have not soiled their garments, and they will walk with me in white, for they are worthy. 5The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels. 6He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’ 7“And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: ‘The words of the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens. 8“ ‘I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. 9Behold, I will make those of the synagogue of Satan who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie—behold, I will make them come and bow down before your feet and they will learn that I have loved you. 10Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try those who dwell on the earth. 11I am coming soon. Revelation 2-3  (KJ3)                    Back

1¶ To the angel of the Ephesian assembly, write: These things says the One holding the seven stars in His right hand, the One walking in the midst of the seven golden lampstands:

2 I know your works, and your labor, and your patience, and that you cannot bear evil ones; and you tried the ones pretending to be apostles and are not, and found them to be liars.

3 And I know you bore up and have patience and on account of My name you have labored and have not wearied.

4 But I have against you that you left your first love.

5 Therefore, remember from where you have fallen, and repent, and do the first works. And if not, I am coming to you quickly, and will remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.

6 But you have this, that you hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.

7 The one having an ear, hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies. To the one overcoming, I will give to him to eat of the Tree of Life which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.

8¶ And to the angel of the assembly in Smyrna, write: These things says the First and the Last, who became a dead one, and lived:

9 I know your works, and the affliction, and the poverty; but you are rich. And I know the blasphemy of the ones saying themselves to be Jews, and they are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.

10 Fear nothing of what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some from you into prison, so that you may be tried; and you will have affliction ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.

11 The one having an ear, hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies. The one overcoming will not be hurt by the second death, not ever!

12¶ And to the angel of the assembly in Pergamos, write: These things says the One having the sharp, two-edged sword:

13 I know your works, and where you dwell, where the throne of Satan is. And you hold My name, and did not deny My faith even in the days in which Antipas was My faithful witness; who was killed alongside you, where Satan dwells.

14 But I have a few things against you, that you have there some holding the teachings of Balaam, who taught Balak to cast a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, to eat idol sacrifices, and to commit fornication.

15 So you also have some holding the teaching of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate.

16 Repent! But if not, I will come to you quickly, and I will make war with them by the sword of My mouth.

17 The one having an ear, hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies. To the one overcoming, I will give him to eat from the hidden manna. And I will give to him a white pebble, and on the pebble a new name having been written, which no one knows if not the one receiving it.

18¶ And to the angel of the assembly in Thyatira, write: These things says the Son of God, the One having His eyes as a flame of fire, and His feet like burnished brass.

19 I know your works, and the love, and the ministry, and the faith, and your patience, and your works; and the last more than the first.

20 But I have a few things against you, that you allow the woman Jezebel to teach, the one saying herself to be a prophetess, and to cause My slaves to go astray, and to commit fornication, and to eat idol sacrifices.

21 And I gave time to her that she might repent of her fornication. And she did not repent.

22 Behold, I am throwing her into a bed, and into great affliction the ones committing adultery with her, unless they repent of their works.

23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the assemblies will know that I am the One searching the kidneys and hearts. And I will give to you, each one, according to your works.

24 But I say to you and to the rest in Thyatira, as many as do not have this teaching, and who did not know the deep things of Satan, as they say; I am not casting another burden on you;

25 but what you have, hold until I shall come.

26 And the one overcoming, and the one keeping My works until the end, “I will give to him authority over the nations,”

27 and “he will shepherd them with an iron staff” (they are “broken to pieces like clay vessels”), as I also have received from My Father.

28 And I will give to him the Morning Star.

29 The one havings an ear, hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies.

1¶ And to the angel of the assembly in Sardis, write: These things says the One having the seven spirits of God, and the seven stars: I know your works, that you have the name that you live, and are a lifeless assembly.

2 Be watching, and establish the things remaining which are about to die. For I have not found your works being fulfilled before God.

3 Therefore, remember how you received and heard, and keep, and repent. If, therefore, you do not watch, I will come upon you like a thief and you will not know what hour I come upon you, not at all.

4 You also have a few names in Sardis which did not defile their garments, and they shall walk with Me in white because they are worthy.

5 The one overcoming, this one shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot his name out of the Book of Life, not ever! And I will acknowledge his name before My Father, and before His angels.

6 The one having an ear, hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies.

7¶ And to the angel of the assembly in Philadelphia, write: These things says the Holy One, the True One, the One having “the key of David”, “the One opening, and no one shuts; and shuts, and no one opens”:

8 I know your works. Behold, I have given a door being opened before you, and no one is able to shut it, for you have a little power and have kept My Word, and have not denied My name.

9 Behold, I give out of the synagogue of Satan the ones saying themselves to be Jews, and they are not, but they lie. Behold, I will make them come and prostrate themselves before your feet, and they shall know that I loved you.

10 Because you kept the Word of My patience, I also will keep you out of the hour of trial, the one being about to come on the whole inhabited earth in order to try the ones dwelling on the earth.

11 Behold, I am coming quickly. Hold what you have that no one take your crown.

12 The one overcoming, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall not go out any more, not ever! And I will write the name of My God on him, and the name of the city of My God, the new Jerusalem which comes down out of Heaven from My God, and My new name.

13 The one having an ear, hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies.

14¶ And to the angel of the assembly in Laodicean, write: These things says the Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God:

15 I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I would that you were cold or hot.

16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I am about to vomit you out of My mouth.

17 Because you say, I am a rich one, and I am made wealthy, and I have need of nothing, and do not know that you are the wretched one and miserable one and poor one and the blind one and the naked one.

18 I advise you to buy from Me gold having been fired by fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, and your shame and nakedness may not appear. And anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.

19 I, as many “as I love, I rebuke and I chasten.” Be zealous, then, and repent.

20 Behold, I stand at the door and am knocking. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will enter to him, and I will dine with him, and he with Me.

21 The one overcoming, I will give to him to sit with Me in My throne, as I also overcame and sat with My Father in His throne.

22 The one having an ear, hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies.

Hold fast what you have, so that no one may seize your crown. 12The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name. 13He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’ 14“And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: ‘The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God’s creation. 15“ ‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! 16So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. 17For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. 18I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself and the shame of your nakedness may not be seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, so that you may see. 19Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent. 20Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. 21The one who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’ ”

24 But I say to you and to the rest in Thyatira, as many as do not have this teaching, and who did not know the deep things of Satan, as they say; I am not casting another burden on you;

24He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field, 25but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away. 26So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also. 27And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds?’ 28He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ So the servants said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ 29But he said, ‘No, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them. 30Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.’ ”

24¶ He put before them another parable, saying: The kingdom of Heaven is compared to a man sowing good seed in his field.

25 But while the men were sleeping, one hostile to him came and sowed darnel in the midst of the wheat, and went away.

26 And when the blade sprouted and produced fruit, then the darnel also appeared.

27 And coming near, the slaves of the housemaster said to him, Lord, did you not sow good seed in your field? Then from where does it have the darnel?

28 And he said to them, A hostile man did this. And the slaves said to him, Do you desire, then, that going out we should gather them?

29 But he said, No, lest gathering the darnel you should uproot the wheat with them.

30 Allow both to grow together until the harvest. And in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, First gather the darnel, and bind them into bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my granary.

18do not be arrogant toward the branches. If you are, remember it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you. 19Then you will say, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.” 20That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand fast through faith. So do not become proud, but fear. 21For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you. 22Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off.

20 Well! For unbelief they were broken off. And you stand by faith. Do not be highminded, but fear.

21 For if God did not spare the according to nature branches, fear lest neither He will spare you.

22 Behold, therefore, the kindness and severity of God: On the ones having fallen, severity. But on you, kindness, if you continue in the kindness. Otherwise, you will also be cut off.

Do not be conceited, but fear; 21for if God did not spare the natural branches, He will not spare you, either. 22Behold then the kindness and severity of God; to those who fell, severity, but to you, God’s kindness, if you continue in His kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off.

2 Thessalonians 2:1–12  (ESV)                    Back

1Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we ask you, brothers, 2not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by a spirit or a spoken word, or a letter seeming to be from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. 3Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, 4who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God. 5Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? 6And you know what is restraining him now so that he may be revealed in his time. 7For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. Only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way. 8And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming. 9The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, 10and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, 12in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

2 Thessalonians 2:1-12  (KJ3)                    Back

1¶ And, brothers, we entreat you, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and of our gathering together to Him,

2 for you not to be quickly shaken in the mind, nor to be disturbed, neither through a spirit, nor through speech, nor through letter, as through us, that the Day of Christ has come.

3¶ Do not let anyone deceive you, by no manner, because that Day will not come if not the apostasy comes first and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition,

6 And now you know the thing holding back, for him to be revealed in his time.

8 And then “the lawless one” will be revealed, “whom” “the Lord” “will consume” “by the spirit of His mouth,” and will bring to nought by the appearance of His presence.

9 His coming is according to the working of Satan in all power and miraculous signs and lying wonders,

10 and in all deception of unrighteousness in the ones perishing, because they did not receive the love of the truth in order for them to be saved.

11 And because of this, God will send to them a working of error, for them to believe the lie,

12 that all may be judged, the ones not believing the truth, but being well-pleased in unrighteousness.
