1. Our first parents,[1] being seduced by the subtlety and temptation of Satan, sinned in eating the forbidden fruit.a This, their sin, God was pleased to permit, according to His wise and holy counsel, having resolved to order it to His own glory.b

Romans 3:10–19 (ESV) Back
10as it is written: “None is righteous, no,
not one; 11no one understands; no one seeks for God. 12All
have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not
even one.” 13“Their throat is an open grave; they use their
tongues to deceive.” “The venom of asps is under their lips.” 14“Their
mouth is full of curses and bitterness.” 15“Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16in
their paths are ruin and misery, 17and the way of peace they have not known.” 18“There
is no fear of God before their eyes.” 19Now we know that whatever the law says it
speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and
the whole world may be held accountable to God.
Romans 3:10-19 (KJ3) Back
10 according as it is written, “There
is not a righteous one, not even one!”
11“There is not one understanding,
there is not one seeking God.”
12 All turned aside; together they
became worthless, not one is doing goodness, not so much as one!Ӡ
13“Their throat is a tomb
being opened;” “they used deceit with their tongues; the poison of asps is
under their lips;
14 whose mouth is full of
cursing and bitterness.
15 Their feet are swift to
shed blood;
16 ruin and misery are in
their ways;
17 and they did not know a way of
peace;
18 there is no fear of God before
their eyes.Ӡ
19¶ But we know that as many things
as the law says, it says to the ones within the law, so that every
mouth may be stopped, and all the world be accountable to God.
Romans 3:10–19 (NASB95) Back
10as it is written, “There is none
righteous, not even one; 11There is none who understands, There is
none who seeks for God; 12All have turned aside, together they have become
useless; There is none who does good, There is not even one.” 13“Their
throat is an open grave, With their tongues they keep deceiving,” “The poison
of asps is under their lips”; 14“Whose mouth is full of cursing and
bitterness”; 15“Their feet are swift to shed blood, 16Destruction
and misery are in their paths, 17And the path of peace they have not
known.” 18“There is no fear of God before their eyes.” 19Now we
know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so
that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God;
Romans 3:10-19 (WEB) Back
10 As
it is written,
11 There is no
one who understands.
12 They have
all turned away.
13“Their
throat is an open tomb.
14“whose mouth is full of cursing and
bitterness.”✡
15“Their feet are swift to shed blood.
16 Destruction and misery are in their ways.
17 The way of peace, they haven’t known.”✡
18“There is no fear of God before their eyes.”✡
19 Now we know that whatever things the
law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be
closed, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God.

Romans 5:12, 15–19 (ESV) Back
12Therefore, just as sin came into the world
through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because
all sinned—
15But the free gift is not like the
trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace
of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for
many. 16And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the
judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift
following many trespasses brought justification. 17For if, because of one man’s trespass,
death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the
abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the
one man Jesus Christ. 18Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for
all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all
men. 19For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the
one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.
Romans 5:12, 15-19 (KJ3) Back
12 Because of this, even as sin
entered the world through one man, and death through sin, so also death passed
to all men, inasmuch as all sinned.
15 But not as the deviation, so
also is the free gift. For if by the deviation of the one the many died, much
more the grace of God, and the gift in grace, which is of the one Man,
Jesus Christ, abounded to the many.
16 And the gift is not as
through one having sinned; for indeed the judgment was of one to
condemnation, but the free gift is of many deviations to justification.
17 For if by the deviation of the
one death reigned through the one, much more the ones receiving the
abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by the
One, Jesus Christ.
18 So therefore, as through one
deviation came to all men to condemnation, so also through one effected
righteousness came to all men to justification of life.
19 For as through the one man’s
disobedience the many were constituted sinners, so also through the obedience
of the One the many shall be constituted righteous.
Romans 5:12, 15–19 (NASB95) Back
12Therefore, just as through one man sin
entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men,
because all sinned—
15But the free gift is not like the
transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more
did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ,
abound to the many. 16The gift is not like that which came through the
one who sinned; for on the one hand the judgment arose from one transgression
resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift arose from many
transgressions resulting in justification. 17For if by the transgression of the one,
death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of
grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One,
Jesus Christ. 18So then as through one transgression there
resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness
there resulted justification of life to all men. 19For as through the one man’s disobedience
the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many
will be made righteous.
Romans 5:12, 15-19 (WEB) Back
12 Therefore as sin entered into the world
through one man, and death through sin; so death passed to all men, because all
sinned.
15 But the free gift isn’t like the trespass.
For if by the trespass of the one the many died, much more did the grace of
God, and the gift by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abound to the
many.
16 The gift is not as through one who sinned:
for the judgment came by one to condemnation, but the free gift came of many
trespasses to justification.
17 For if by the trespass of the one, death
reigned through the one; so much more will those who receive the abundance of
grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one, Jesus
Christ.
18 So then as through one trespass, all men
were condemned; even so through one act of righteousness, all men were
justified to life.
19 For as through the one man’s disobedience
many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the one, many will be
made righteous.
1 Corinthians 15:21–22, 45, 49 (ESV) Back
21For as by a man came death, by a man has

45Thus it is written, “The first man Adam

1 Corinthians 15:21-22, 45, 49 (KJ3) Back

5For while we were living in the flesh, our
sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit
for death.
7What then shall we say? That the law is
sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known
sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said,
“You shall not covet.” 8But sin, seizing an opportunity through the
commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. For apart from the law,
sin lies dead.
25Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our
Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I

through the Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not
said, “You shall not covet.” 8But sin, taking opportunity through the
commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind; for apart from the Law sin
is dead.
25Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our

[2] impute to: charge to, reckon to, or account to. In this important theological term, the frequent modern connotation of falseness is entirely absent; God cannot lie.
[3] Adam’s corruption and sin is passed from father to son and father to daughter by spiritual means, not biological, genetic, or epigenetic means.
[5] Regeneration is the work of the Holy Spirit by which the sinner is graciously given a heart to believe the Gospel.
[6] The discipline of progressive mortification (putting to death) of sin by self-examination, prayer, confession, and repentance from particular sins is a vital part of sanctification and growth in Christ.
[7] motions: in this context, actual sins that we commit. We are not sinners because we sin, but we sin because we are sinners (corrupt).
