Chapter 10: Of Effectual Calling$

Chapter 10: Of Effectual Calling

1. All of those whom God has predestined to life, and those only, He is pleased in His appointed and accepted time to call effectually:[1][LAP1] , a

·       By His Word and Spiritb

·       Out of that state of sin and death in which they are by nature

·       Into grace and salvation by Jesus Christ.c

He:

·       Enlightens their minds spiritually and savingly to understand the things of Godd

·       Takes away their hearts of stone,[2] and gives to them hearts of flesh[3], e

·       Renews their wills

·       Determines [foreordains] them to that which is good by His almighty powerf

·       Effectually draws them to Jesus Christ,g yet so as they come most freely, being made willing by His grace.h

2. This effectual call is of God’s free and special grace alone, not from anything at all foreseen in man,a who is altogether a passive recipient. But once made spiritually alive and renewed by the Holy Spirit,b a man is, by this transformation, enabled to answer this call, and to embrace the grace offered and conveyed in it.c

22 If any man doesn’t love the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be accursed.* Come, Lord!

Galatians 1:6–8  (ESV)                    Back

6I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 8But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.

Galatians 1:6-8  (KJ3)                    Back

6¶ I wonder that you are so quickly turning away from the One having called you in the grace of Christ to another gospel,

7 which is not another of the same kind; if not there are some troubling you, even determined to pervert the gospel of Christ.

8 But even if we, or an angel out of Heaven, should preach a gospel to you beside the gospel we preached to you, let him be accursed.

Galatians 1:6–8  (NASB95)                    Back

6I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; 7which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 8But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed!

Galatians 1:6-8  (WEB)                    Back

6           I marvel that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ to a different “good news”;

7 and there isn’t another “good news.” Only there are some who trouble you, and want to pervert the Good News of Christ.

8 But even though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you any “good news” other than that which we preached to you, let him be cursed.

[1] effectually: effective—God’s call will be heeded and effective for all of His intended purposes

[2] heart of stone: a heart hardened, set against God

[3] heart of flesh: a healthy heart that is as it should be, sensitive to God

[4] profess: openly acknowledge

[5] pernicious: highly injurious, destructive, deadly

[6] The original ends in verse 5, strangely truncating the passage. It is assumed to be a typographical error.

* TR reads “understanding” instead of “hearts”

Isaiah 54:13

* NU puts the phrase “not of works, but of him who calls” at the beginning of verse 12 instead of the end of verse 11.

* The word translated “anew” here and in John 3:7 (anothen) also means “again” and “from above”.

The same Greek word (pneuma) means wind, breath, and spirit.

or, I AM

* Greek: anathema.

 [LAP1]I know you state in the opening that footnotes will fall wherever Word puts them, but I figured I’d point out that this footnote shows up on the next page instead of this one.
