1. Sacraments are holy signs and seals of the covenant of grace,a directly instituted by Godb to:
· Represent Christ and His benefits
· Confirm our participation in, and claim upon,[1] Himc
· Put a visible difference between those who belong to the Church and the rest of the worldd
· Solemnly engage the recipients to the service of God in Christ, according to His Word.e

2. There is in every sacrament a spiritual relation, or sacramental union, between the sign and the thing signified. Because of this, the names and effects of the one are often attributed to the other.
Genesis 17:10 (ESV KJ3 NASB WEB) ; Matthew 26:27–28 (ESV KJ3 NASB WEB) ; Titus 3:5 (ESV KJ3 NASB WEB)
3. The grace that is exhibited in or by the sacraments (rightly used), is not conferred by any power in them. Neither does the efficacy of a sacrament depend upon the piety or intention of him who administers it.a Rather, a sacrament’s efficacy depends upon:
· The work of the Spiritb
· The word of institution, which contains, together:
o A precept authorizing the use of the sacrament
o A promise of benefit to worthy receivers.c

[1] The original has “interest in” in the sense of ownership, share, or participation in something, implying rightful claim or ownership in some sense.
[2] The RPCNA Constitution references Galatians 3:17 (ESV KJ3 NASB WEB) ; Schaff references Galatians 3:27 (ESV KJ3 NASB WEB) . Both are applicable, but Galatians 3:27 (ESV KJ3 NASB WEB) seems much more to the point, as it appears as a footnote in Schaff, just after “Confirm our interest in Him.”
